About "Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) Awareness Training"
Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) is a critical control system used to remove hazardous substances from the air, such as dust, mist, vapour, gas, and fumes — preventing workers from inhaling potentially harmful contaminants.
When designed, used, and maintained correctly, LEV systems:
Capture contaminated air at the source
Contain it to prevent exposure
Remove or filter the pollutants
And safely discharge or clean the air for safe recirculation
This LEV Awareness Course provides a clear and practical understanding of how LEV systems work, their legal implications, and how to ensure they’re operating effectively in your workplace. Staff will also learn about air exchange rates, LEV checks, RPE (Respiratory Protective Equipment), and how to spot when something’s gone wrong.
Whether you’re working in an environment that generates fine dusts or welding fumes, proper LEV use could mean the difference between long-term respiratory health and lifelong illness.
Who Should Take This Course?
This training is essential for employees who:
Work in environments where airborne contaminants are produced
Operate machinery or processes that create dust, gas, mist, or vapour
Maintain or inspect ventilation systems
Oversee health and safety in facilities with extraction systems
It is particularly relevant to:
Construction workers
Production and manufacturing staff
Maintenance teams
Facilities managers
Engineers and site supervisors
However, the course is beneficial to all employees who need to understand the role of LEV in maintaining a safe working environment.
No prior training is necessary — this course provides foundational awareness for all levels of staff.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will:
Understand what LEV is and how it protects health
Recognise the legal obligations under COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) Regulations
Learn about the different types of LEV systems and their appropriate uses
Understand how air exchange and containment work in LEV
Know how to inspect, test, and maintain LEV systems
Understand the relationship between LEV and RPE
Be able to identify signs of LEV failure and act accordingly
Course Content Overview
Video 1: LEV Training
⏱ Duration: 13 minutes 24 seconds
What is LEV and why is it used?
Legal requirements under COSHH
Types of LEV systems (e.g., hoods, ducts, filters)
Air flow, air exchange, and system design basics
Routine LEV inspections and record-keeping
Role of RPE and when it’s needed alongside LEV
Identifying poor performance or system failure
Safe disposal of contaminants and maintenance considerations
Assessment and Certification
After completing the video module, participants will take a short questionnaire to test their understanding. A Certificate of Completion is generated upon successful completion — suitable for internal compliance records and audits.
Benefits of This Course
Promotes respiratory health and reduces long-term illness risk
Helps employers meet COSHH obligations and legal duties
Ensures employees know how to use LEV systems safely and effectively
Supports workplace air quality management
Only 13 minutes in duration — ideal for inductions or toolbox talks
